Decluttering the Vanity: Making Peace with My Makeup Stash

Does anyone else go on a cleaning and organizing spree after the new year? Decluttering and organizing is one of those things that I don’t really like while I’m doing it, but I absolutely love it when I’m finished! So I always try to take time during the first few months of the year to re-evaluate the storage systems I have in place in various rooms of my house. Have they made it easy to keep things organized? Are they still working for the amount and type of things I’m trying to keep together?

The master bathroom is the area I struggle with most to keep organized…and I’m not going to lie, the struggle occurs mainly on and around my vanity. Between lotions, makeup, and all the other toiletries, the countertop and drawers get cluttered pretty quickly. I decided to take the situation in hand last month and dedicated myself to whipping this area of the house into shape.

So here’s the crash course on my journey to bathroom organization…first up, makeup! Please tell me I’m not the only person who has tons and tons of makeup but only really uses about 2% of it. Anyone else with me? Between free samples and things I buy in gift sets because I think I’m saving money, I have a ton of makeup and skincare products that I rarely – if ever! – use. I stick to the basics when it comes to my daily routine. So why were my drawers and countertops overflowing with bottles and jars that were literally collecting dust? Definitely not a smart use of space.

One rule of thumb that makes a ton of sense but that I constantly have to remind myself of? Don’t store stuff that should be tossed! So I went through and pitched things that I knew I’d never use (even on special occasions) or things that were old. Yes, cosmetics have expiration dates! After I got rid of all the old/unwanted makeup, I organized my everyday essentials in a clear organizer on my countertop. I love this one from Target because it’s got a space for everything and keeps all the essentials within easy reach. I then stashed my other products in baskets in my vanity drawers. Dollar store baskets are my go-to when I’m looking for easy drawer organization. You can get a 3-pack of long, narrow plastic baskets for a buck…perfect for eyeliners, lip glosses, Q-tips and more!

Conquering the Counter Chaos

I also made a few changes to keep my countertop not just clutter-free, but cleaner. I always used to get little rings on my counter thanks to my toothbrush and hand soap. Not a huge deal, but this drove me crazy! So I bought a cute trinket tray and use it almost like a coaster for my soap bottle. It catches any drips and keeps my counter clean. Another amazing invention I found during my hunt for fun bathroom organization products was the Quip toothbrush. Have you guys heard of this? It’s a compact electric toothbrush that you can actually stick to your mirror (or a tile surface)! Keeps your toothbrush off the counter and out of the way of germs that could be flying around your sink. Win-win!

Streamlining Storage Solutions

I also put things that I only use intermittently (face masks, nail polish, etc.) in these stackable plastic trays. They come in several sizes and you can stack as many as you want, making them great for under-the-sink cabinets! While we’re on the subject of organizing, I want to share a book that’s currently on my nightstand – A Simplified Life by Emily Ley. This is a great resource full of practical tips for simplifying all areas of your life – from your personal finances and closet to mealtime prep. I’m really loving it so far!

The Grout Conundrum: A Tile Lover’s Lament

Ah, the joys of a beautifully tiled bathroom – the sleek, shiny surfaces, the timeless elegance. But alas, that bright-eyed enthusiasm quickly fades when you realize the true nemesis hiding between the tiles: the grout. That porous, light-colored material that seems to attract every speck of dirt, mildew, and grime like a magnet.

I’ll admit it, I was one of those tile enthusiasts who blissfully ignored the grout situation in my bathroom. “How hard can it be?” I thought, “I’ll just give it a quick scrub now and then.” Boy, was I in for a rude awakening. Before I knew it, my once pristine grout had transformed into a dingy, discolored mess, and I found myself in a full-blown grout cleaning crisis.

Tackling the Grout Grime: A Step-by-Step Guide

But fear not, my fellow tile lovers, for I have emerged from the grout battle victorious, and I’m here to share my hard-won wisdom. With the right techniques and a bit of elbow grease, you too can keep your bathroom grout looking fresh and fabulous.

Step 1: Daily Maintenance

The key to grout longevity is consistent, gentle care. After each shower or bath, be sure to give those tile and glass surfaces a quick wipe-down with a squeegee [1]. This simple step will prevent water spots, soap scum, and other unsightly buildup from settling into the grout lines.

Next, give the area a light spritz with a mild, daily shower cleaner. You can even make your own by mixing a 4:1 ratio of water to white vinegar [2]. The vinegar will help keep mold and mildew at bay without being too harsh on the grout.

Step 2: Weekly Deep Clean

Even with daily upkeep, your grout will still need a more thorough cleaning on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. For this, you’ll want to create a baking soda paste and scrub it into the grout lines with a dedicated grout brush or an old toothbrush [2]. The baking soda will gently lift any stubborn stains without damaging the grout.

If the grout is looking particularly grimy, you can swap the water for hydrogen peroxide in your baking soda paste [4]. Just be sure to rinse it off completely afterwards to avoid any discoloration.

Step 3: Tackle Tough Stains

Sometimes, no matter how diligently you clean, those pesky stains just won’t budge. When the baking soda paste just won’t cut it, it’s time to bring in the big guns – namely, oxygen bleach [7].

Mix up a solution of powdered oxygen bleach, like OxiClean, and water, and let it sit on the grout for 10-15 minutes before scrubbing. The bleach will break down those stubborn stains without being as harsh as chlorine-based cleaners. Just remember to ventilate the area well and wear gloves to protect your hands.

Step 4: Seal and Protect

Once you’ve got your grout looking bright and shiny, the final step is to protect it from future discoloration. Grout sealers fill in the porous material, creating a barrier against dirt, moisture, and mold [2]. Aim to reseal your grout at least once a year, or more often in high-traffic areas.

Maintaining pristine bathroom grout may seem like a never-ending battle, but trust me, it’s a war worth winning. Not only will it preserve the beauty of your tiled oasis, but it can also prevent costly water damage down the line.

Remember, consistency is key. A few minutes of daily upkeep and a thorough weekly scrub can mean the difference between a grout-cleaning crisis and a gleaming, grout-free sanctuary. And if all else fails, don’t be afraid to call in the professionals for a deep clean or even a full grout replacement [4].

So, the next time you step into your tiled bathroom, take a moment to appreciate the beauty – and then get to work keeping that grout in tip-top shape. Your future self (and your wallet) will thank you.
