Picking the Perfect Bathtub for Your Bathroom

Picking the Perfect Bathtub for Your Bathroom

Picking the Perfect Bathtub for Your Bathroom

Ah, the humble bathtub – the unsung hero of the bathroom, quietly awaiting your arrival to transform it into a personal oasis of tranquility. But choosing the right bathtub is no simple task, my friends. It’s a delicate dance between form, function, and the eternal quest for bathroom bliss.

Let me take you on a journey through the captivating world of bathtubs, where every curve, every material, and every unique feature holds the power to elevate your bathroom experience to new heights. Prepare to be dazzled, my fellow bathroom enthusiasts, as we explore the ins and outs of selecting the perfect bathtub for your sanctuary.

Diving into Bathtub Styles

First and foremost, let’s dive into the different bathtub styles that await your discerning eye. Freestanding tubs, with their sculptural elegance, have the power to command the room, creating a magnificent focal point that screams “I’m the star of the show!” [1] These beauties come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from the classic clawfoot to the sleek, modern oval, each with their own unique charm.

On the other hand, built-in tubs offer a more practical approach, seamlessly integrating into the surrounding architecture. [1] These space-saving wonders can be the perfect solution for those of us with smaller bathrooms, without sacrificing an ounce of style. And let’s not forget the back-to-wall hybrids, which combine the best of both worlds – the visual impact of a freestanding tub with the space-saving advantages of a built-in. [1]

Sizing Up the Situation

Next, we must consider the all-important factor of size. As they say, size does matter – at least when it comes to bathtubs. [2] While larger tubs may seem like the obvious choice for a luxurious soak, it’s crucial to ensure that your bathroom can comfortably accommodate the chosen behemoth. Measure, measure, and measure again, my friends, for the last thing you want is a tub that dominates the room, leaving no space for, well, anything else.

On the flip side, smaller tubs can be the perfect solution for more compact bathrooms, with the added bonus of being easier on your water bill. [2] And let’s not forget the delightful Japanese-style soaking tubs, which trade size for depth, allowing you to sink in and indulge in a true relaxation ritual.

Materializing the Perfect Tub

Now, let’s talk materials. Ah, the endless options that await us – from the classic porcelain to the trendy copper, each with its own unique charm and personality. [3] Do you crave the timeless elegance of cast iron, or the modern sleekness of acrylic? Perhaps you’re drawn to the natural warmth of wood, or the sophisticated allure of cultured marble. The choice, my friends, is yours to make.

But beware, for with great material comes great responsibility (or at least, great maintenance). [3] Will you be willing to put in the elbow grease to keep that porcelain pristine, or do you crave the low-maintenance bliss of an acrylic tub? The decision ultimately comes down to your lifestyle and personal preferences.

Placement, Placement, Placement

Now, let’s talk about the all-important matter of placement. Where you position your bathtub can make all the difference in the world. [1] Freestanding tubs offer the ultimate flexibility, allowing you to create a stunning centerpiece in the middle of the room. But be mindful, dear readers, for these beauties can be quite the divas when it comes to finding the perfect spot.

On the other hand, built-in tubs thrive in their designated nooks and crannies, seamlessly blending into the overall bathroom design. [1] And don’t forget about those corner tubs – the perfect solution for making the most of that often-neglected real estate.

Considering the User Experience

Finally, let’s not forget the most important factor of all – the user experience. After all, what good is a stunning bathtub if it doesn’t provide the ultimate in comfort and relaxation? [4] Take the time to test out those tubs, my friends. Sink in, stretch out, and imagine yourself indulging in the ultimate self-care ritual. Does it hug you in all the right places, or does it leave you feeling a bit…confined?

And let’s not forget about those with special needs. [7] For our elderly or mobility-challenged friends, a walk-in tub or one with strategic grab bars could be the difference between a soothing soak and a stressful struggle.

Bringing It All Together

So, there you have it, my fellow bathroom enthusiasts – the ultimate guide to picking the perfect bathtub for your sanctuary. From style to size, material to placement, and everything in between, the choices can feel overwhelming. But fear not, for with a little research, a dash of imagination, and a healthy dose of self-care, you’ll be soaking in the lap of luxury in no time.

Remember, your bathtub is not just a functional fixture – it’s a statement piece, a reflection of your personal style, and a sanctuary for your soul. So, take your time, explore the options, and let your heart (and your backside) be your guide. Happy bathing, my friends!

Update Your Bathrooms Style Affordably with These Tips

Bathrooms from the 90s – A Blast from the Past

After my blog posts on updating 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s kitchens, I got tons of requests for the same series on bathrooms – ASK, AND YE SHALL RECEIVE! And talking about asking and receiving, on Instagram, I asked for your outdated bathrooms from previous decades and you DELIVERED – thank you! In fact, it was hard to choose which bathrooms would make the best update examples. Once I narrowed it down, I decided to start with 1990s bathrooms, as a) I’ve already done a blog post on 2000s loos, (which I will be adding more to, shortly) and b) 90s bathrooms are the ones showing up most often in my inbox.

Bathrooms built or renovated in the 90s are pretty easy to spot – think beige, oak, and lots of brass. The classic 90s bathroom is often characterized by its fussy color palette, busy tile patterns, and outdated fixtures. But don’t worry, my friends, with a few budget-friendly updates, you can easily transform your 90s bathroom into a fresh, modern oasis.

I could go on and on about the quintessential 90s bathroom, but instead, let me show you some real-life examples that will have you reaching for your ‘Rachel’ haircut and high-waisted mom jeans (which are trendy again, by the way). Check out this bad boy who’s screamin’ ’90s…

90s bathroom example

Yikes, that’s a lot of beige, oak, and brass, am I right? In my previous life as a Home Stager, I worked on a bathroom just like this one in the 2000s. Sadly, I can’t find the ‘after’ photos, but trust me, it was a major transformation. And here’s another beauty of a 90s primary (previously referred to as ‘master’) bathroom…

Another 90s bathroom example

Ah, the quintessential 90s bathroom – all the hallmarks are there, from the ornate light fixture to the busy tile pattern. But fear not, my friends, I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve to help you update your 90s bathroom without breaking the bank.

Affordable Bathroom Update Ideas

Painting Your Cabinetry

One of the easiest and most budget-friendly ways to update your 90s bathroom is to paint your cabinetry. The typical 1990s bathroom is a bit fussy when it comes to color pairings, so choosing the right paint color is key. Check out this next bathroom from the 90s and how it was updated on a budget, starting with the vanity…

Painted vanity update

Guess what’s STILL THERE? All of the expensive finishes, including the travertine tile, stayed put! By simply painting the vanity, this bathroom got a fresh, modern look without a complete gut job.

Speaking of travertine, let’s take a look at another 90s bathroom that embraced this classic material…

Travertine tile bathroom

This travertine tile winks at the 2000s, but the tile size and details, light fixture, faucet, and door hardware are all quintessentially 90s. However, it’s a relatively easy update if you’re good with a ‘happy medium’. While keeping the big bones, including the vanity, linen tower, countertop, and tile floor, a few budget-friendly changes can make this bathroom look so much better.

Choosing the Right Wall Color

It’s amazing how much the right wall color can transform a 90s bathroom. This next ‘beauty’ is a prime example…

Bathroom with updated wall color

Walls, Benjamin Moore Moonshine. Vanity, Sherwin Williams Grays Harbor. Sure, there’s a new quartz countertop, but at 42″, the replacement cost is manageable compared to a full gut-job. Notice the following… the hardware, lighting, and cabinet hardware are all AWESOMELY coordinated in finish and style. From there, we chose the perfect paint color for the walls, bringing the gray of the vanity and the beige of the tile floor together. But you can’t go throwing any ole color on your 90s vanity or you’ll lose your sanity…

Whereas bathrooms built or remodeled in the 2000s often cater to warmer tones, many 90s bathrooms prefer the cooler end of the color spectrum, including blues, greens, and grays. A little color theory can go a long way in reviving your 90s bathroom.

Accessorizing with Intention

The little details can make a big difference in an outdated bathroom. This next bathroom is a little gem…

Bathroom with updated accessories

While the taupe/mauve tub, shower surround, and toilet aren’t ‘modern’, they’re well-coordinated with each other and with the tile floor. The wall color is a pretty contrast to the fixtures, however, it ‘accents’ them, which isn’t always the goal when dealing with a non-traditional fixture color. Instead, I’d be more inclined to lean into the fixtures and their undertones.

One easy update that can make a big impact? Swapping out the shower curtain rod. Whether you prefer a curved or straight rod, almost every 1990s bathroom can benefit from this simple swap.

Curved shower curtain rod

Personally, I only use curved, hotel-style shower rods as they add style to a bathroom and extra elbow room in the shower. I also like them screwed permanently into the wall versus tension, but that’s a personal preference.

Case Studies: Updating 1990s Bathrooms

Let’s dive into a few real-life case studies to see how we can breathe new life into those quintessential 90s bathrooms…

Case Study #1: The Beadboard Beauty

This cute little bathroom has a lot of potential with its beadboard walls and charming details. But those outdated finishes and fixtures are holding it back.

Looking at the space, I’d start by focusing on the vanity area. Knowing I want to create a warm, earthy color palette, I’d look at black or antique brass for any hardware or metal finishes. As for style, with the beadboard being a bit more homey, a faucet with a bit of styling is nice versus a modern, uber-clean-lined piece.

For the lighting, I’d choose a fixture that picks up on the lines and styling of the faucet, creating a cohesive look. Something like this Exmouth light fixture would be perfect.

From there, I’d consider painting the beadboard and all the trim in a lovely earthy green hue like Sherwin Williams Cast Iron. This will complement the beige tile floor and countertop beautifully. And instead of painting the vanity, I might actually leave it in its current wood tone to create a nice contrast with the painted walls.

The final touch would be swapping out the straight shower curtain rod for a curved one and adding a shower curtain in varying shades of taupe to tie everything together.

Case Study #2: The 90s Classic

This bathroom is about as 90s as it gets, with its busy tile pattern, brass fixtures, and dated vanity. But with a few strategic updates, we can bring it into the 21st century.

First up, I’d take a look at the vanity. Since the tile and countertop are staying put, I’d consider painting the vanity in a modern off-white or light beige shade. This will instantly brighten up the space and provide a nice neutral backdrop for the other updates.

Next, I’d swap out the dated brass fixtures for something more on-trend, like oil-rubbed bronze or matte black. This includes the faucet, towel bars, and light fixtures. I’d also consider upgrading the mirror, perhaps opting for a more vertical, rectangular shape to balance the horizontal lines of the vanity.

To tie everything together, I’d choose a soothing wall color, like Sherwin Williams Mindful Gray, that complements the existing tile and countertop. And of course, a curved shower rod and fresh shower curtain would be the final touch.

Case Study #3: The Tile Lover’s Dream

This 90s bathroom is an ode to travertine tile, and while it’s a classic material, the busy pattern and dated fixtures make it feel a bit tired. But with a few strategic updates, we can give it new life.

Since the tile and countertop are staying put, I’d focus my efforts on the vanity and hardware. Painting the vanity in a warm, earthy tone like Sherwin Williams Anew Gray would give it a more modern feel. And by swapping out the brass fixtures for something in a matte black or oil-rubbed bronze finish, we can create a cohesive, stylish look.

For the lighting, I’d choose a fixture with clean lines and a bit of industrial flair to balance the more traditional feel of the vanity and tile. And of course, a curved shower rod and fresh shower curtain would be the perfect finishing touch.

The key with this bathroom, and really any 90s bathroom, is to work with what you’ve got. By focusing on the small details and making strategic updates, you can create a fresh, modern space without breaking the bank.

Wrapping it Up

Well, as you can see, there’s a lot of potential in those 90s bathrooms, even if they’re a bit stuck in the past. By painting, accessorizing, and making a few thoughtful updates, you can transform your outdated bathroom into a modern oasis without spending a fortune.

Remember, these ideas are all about saving money by using what you have while adding some visual value where you can. So, grab your ‘Rachel’ haircut, slip into those high-waisted mom jeans, and let’s get to work on updating your 90s bathroom!

Clever Touches to Customize Your Rental Bathroom

Clever Touches to Customize Your Rental Bathroom

Embrace the Quirks

As a fellow renter, I know the struggle of living with a bathroom that just doesn’t quite feel like “you.” The outdated fixtures, the generic tile, the builder-grade vanity – it can be enough to make you want to throw in the towel before you even start. But have no fear, my friend! With a little creativity and some rental-friendly tricks up your sleeve, you can transform that blah bathroom into a space that reflects your personal style.

You see, I used to be the queen of thinking, “What’s the point? I’m just going to have to change it all back when I move out anyway.” But then I had a revelation – why not make the most of the space I’m in now? After all, home is where the heart is, regardless of whether you own or rent. So I threw caution to the wind and embraced the quirks of my rental bathroom, and let me tell you, the results were nothing short of magical.

One of the first things I tackled was the ho-hum tile. Now, I know you’re probably thinking, “But Casey, I can’t just slap a new tile over the old one!” And you’d be absolutely right. But that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with the boring beige squares forever. Instead, I opted for a little DIY paint magic. With some painter’s tape and a steady hand, I transformed those drab tiles into a stunning striped masterpiece. The best part? When it came time to move out, I simply peeled off the tape and the original tile was good as new. Talk about a rental-friendly transformation!

Accessorize with Personality

Next up, let’s talk about the often-overlooked accessories. Sure, you could stick with the standard-issue towel bars and toilet paper holders, but where’s the fun in that? Instead, I went on a hunt for pieces that would add a touch of personality to the space. A vintage-inspired coat hook here, a funky soap dispenser there – these small details made all the difference in making my rental feel like a true reflection of my style.

And speaking of style, don’t be afraid to let your personal flair shine through with your decor choices. Sure, you might not be able to gut the entire bathroom and start from scratch, but that doesn’t mean you can’t infuse it with your unique sensibilities. Whether it’s a bold, colorful shower curtain, a whimsical piece of wall art, or a collection of quirky accessories, these touches can transform a generic bathroom into a one-of-a-kind oasis.

Maximize Storage on a Budget

Now, I know what you’re thinking – “But Casey, where am I supposed to put all my stuff?” Fear not, my friend, for I have the answer. One of the best things about being a renter is the freedom to get creative with your storage solutions. Instead of relying on the standard-issue vanity or medicine cabinet, think outside the box.

Enter the trusty utility cart. This little beauty can be a game-changer in a rental bathroom, providing extra storage without the need for any permanent installations. Simply wheel it in, load it up with your essentials, and voila – instant organization. And the best part? When it’s time to move out, you can just as easily wheel it out the door.

Lighting Upgrades on a Dime

Finally, let’s talk about the often-overlooked element of lighting. In a rental bathroom, it’s easy to feel stuck with the dated, Builder’s Choice fixture that came with the place. But fear not, my fellow renters, for there are easy (and budget-friendly!) ways to give your lighting a much-needed upgrade.

One of my favorite tricks is to swap out the boring old light bulbs for something a bit more stylish. LED bulbs not only save you money on your energy bills, but they also come in a variety of warm, mood-setting hues that can instantly elevate the ambiance of your space. And if you’re feeling extra adventurous, consider adding in some LED strip lights along the baseboards or under the vanity. It’s an easy, renter-friendly way to create a spa-like vibe that’ll have you feeling like you’re at a high-end hotel rather than your humble rental.

So there you have it, my fellow renters – the keys to transforming your rental bathroom into a space that’s both functional and fabulous. From embracing the quirks to accessorizing with personality, these clever touches will have you loving your rental bathroom in no time. Now go forth, my friends, and make your mark on that drab space – one rental-friendly makeover at a time!

Refresh Your Bathroom Without Remodeling with Easy Fixes

Refresh Your Bathroom Without Remodeling with Easy Fixes

Say Goodbye to Dated Decor: Easy Bathroom Updates That Won’t Break the Bank

Ah, the joys of homeownership. One day, you’re basking in the glory of your newly purchased abode, giddily dreaming of all the ways you’ll transform it into your personal oasis. The next, you find yourself staring down a bathroom that looks like it’s stuck in the 70s, complete with garish floral wallpaper and a vanity straight out of your grandma’s time.

I’ve been there, my friends. When my husband, Shad, and I bought our first home, the bathroom was an absolute nightmare. Aqua tile, pink sink, and a vanity that looked like it had survived the disco era – it was a design disaster. But instead of diving headfirst into a full-scale remodel (and emptying our wallets in the process), we decided to tackle the space with a series of budget-friendly updates. And let me tell you, the transformation was nothing short of astonishing.

So, if your bathroom is in dire need of a refresh but the thought of a full-blown remodel has you breaking out in hives, fear not. I’m here to share the easy, affordable tricks that can breathe new life into your tired powder room without the hassle and expense of a complete overhaul.

Embrace the Power of Paint

When it comes to updating a dated bathroom, paint is your secret weapon. And I’m not just talking about slapping a fresh coat on the walls. Nope, this is paint with a purpose, my friends.

Start by taking a good, hard look at your cabinets. If they’re sporting that classic wood-tone finish that screams “1980s,” a few coats of paint can work wonders. [1] Just make sure to sand and prime the surfaces first for a smooth, professional-looking finish. And don’t stop at the cabinets – consider painting your vanity, too. A bold pop of color can instantly modernize the space.

But the paint party doesn’t stop there. If you’ve got outdated tile (hello, avocado green!), don’t fret. Grab a can of tile paint and get to work. [2] Now, I know what you’re thinking – “Paint on tile? That’ll never last!” But trust me, the results can be truly jaw-dropping. Just be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to the letter for maximum durability.

And let’s not forget about your trusty old brick fireplace. If it’s dragging down the entire vibe of your bathroom, a fresh coat of paint can work magic. Go for a crisp, clean white or experiment with a trendy limewash technique for a gorgeous, weathered look. [1]

Flooring Facelift

Ripping up old tile or linoleum can be a messy, expensive hassle. But that doesn’t mean you’re doomed to live with an eyesore underfoot. Enter the wonderful world of luxury vinyl tile (LVT) and peel-and-stick flooring. [3]

These modern flooring options have come a long way, my friends. Gone are the days of cheap, plasticky-looking vinyl. Today’s LVT and peel-and-stick tiles can seamlessly mimic the look of hardwood, stone, or even intricate tile patterns – all for a fraction of the cost. [4] And the best part? You can simply lay them right over your existing floor, no demolition required.

Now, I know what you’re thinking – “But won’t that look cheap and tacky?” Not a chance! With the right products and a bit of DIY know-how, you can achieve a high-end, custom-looking floor that will have your guests doing double-takes. [3] Just be sure to thoroughly clean and prep your subfloor before installation for optimal results.

Swap Out Those Dated Fixtures

If you’re anything like me, you probably have a love-hate relationship with your bathroom’s fixtures. On the one hand, they’re functional – hey, we all need a sink and a toilet, am I right? But on the other hand, those outdated faucets, light fixtures, and hardware can make the entire space feel, well, stuck in the past.

Luckily, updating your fixtures is a quick, easy, and budget-friendly way to give your bathroom a fresh new look. Start by swapping out that ancient, leaky faucet for a sleek, modern replacement. [4] Not only will it instantly elevate the vanity, but it can also help you save on water bills in the long run.

Next, turn your attention to the lighting. Those ubiquitous “boob lights” (you know the ones I’m talking about) have got to go. [1] Replace them with stylish pendants, sconces, or even a striking chandelier for a touch of glamour. And don’t forget to update the hardware on your cabinets and drawers – new knobs and pulls can make a world of difference.

Embrace Textiles and Accents

Sometimes, the key to reviving a dated bathroom isn’t about making major changes – it’s simply about injecting some personality through carefully chosen textiles and accents.

Start by swapping out that tired old shower curtain for something fresh and fabulous. [4] Opt for a bold, patterned number or a crisp, white linen look. Then, layer in some plush new towels, a fluffy bath mat, and maybe even a set of decorative jars or baskets to really pull the whole look together.

And don’t forget about the walls! A few pieces of eye-catching artwork or a trendy, peel-and-stick wallpaper can instantly transform the vibe of your bathroom. [4] Just be sure to choose materials that can withstand the humidity and moisture of the space.

The Devil is in the Details

When it comes to refreshing a dated bathroom, it’s often the little things that make the biggest impact. Think about swapping out those dated electrical outlets and light switches for a sleeker, more modern look. [1] Or consider upgrading your old, clunky toilet paper holder and towel bars with something more stylish and streamlined.

And don’t forget about the hardware on your cabinets and drawers. A simple switch to new knobs or pulls can breathe new life into existing cabinetry. [1] Just make sure to measure carefully and choose hardware that complements the overall aesthetic you’re going for.

The Moral of the Story

The moral of this story, my friends, is that you don’t need to blow your entire life savings on a full-scale bathroom remodel to transform your dated space. With a little creativity, a touch of elbow grease, and a strategic eye for affordable updates, you can breathe new life into your tired powder room without breaking the bank.

So, what are you waiting for? Grab a paintbrush, some new fixtures, and get to work on creating the bathroom of your dreams. Trust me, the end result will be worth it – and your wallet will thank you, too.

Ways to Sneak More Function into Your Bathroom Storage

Ways to Sneak More Function into Your Bathroom Storage

Bathroom Storage Woes? I Feel You!

Ah, the bathroom – the place where we start and end our days, yet it’s often the most neglected space in the home. If you’re anything like me, your bathroom is probably a jumbled mess of half-used lotions, dusty hairdryers, and towels strewn everywhere. The struggle is real, my friends.

But fear not! I’m here to share my top tips for sneaking more function into your bathroom storage without sacrificing style. Because let’s be real, a beautifully organized and functional bathroom can make all the difference in setting the tone for your entire day.

Maximize Every Inch of Wall Space

The key to creating the illusion of more space in a tiny bathroom is to utilize your walls to the fullest. Install shelves, hooks, and even hanging baskets to store everything from extra towels to hair products. [1] Just make sure to keep the overall aesthetic cohesive and visually appealing.

One of my favorite hacks is to repurpose a simple spice rack as a mini shelving unit. It’s the perfect spot to stash cotton swabs, Q-tips, and other small essentials. Plus, it adds a touch of farmhouse chic to the space.

Invest in Clever Storage Solutions

When it comes to bathroom storage, functionality should be your top priority. That’s why I’m a big proponent of finding creative solutions that cater to your specific needs. [2]

For example, if you have a vanity with limited drawer space, consider adding dividers or organizers to keep everything neat and tidy. Or, if you’re short on counter space, look for a tiered caddy or lazy susan that allows you to stack your go-to products.

And let’s not forget about the power of over-the-door storage! Hang a multi-tiered organizer on the back of your bathroom door to stash extra toilet paper, hair tools, and other frequently used items.

Declutter and Streamline

I know, I know – decluttering is the bane of our existence. But trust me, taking the time to purge your bathroom of unnecessary items can make a world of difference in terms of storage and organization. [3]

Start by going through every nook and cranny, tossing out expired products, donating unused items, and grouping similar things together. This will not only make it easier to find what you need but also create a more calming, spa-like atmosphere.

Once you’ve streamlined your collection, consider investing in some stylish storage containers or baskets to keep everything neat and tidy. Bonus points if they double as decor!

Leverage the Power of Vertical Storage

When floor space is limited, it’s time to think vertically. Tall, skinny shelves or cabinets can be a game-changer in a small bathroom, allowing you to stack items without taking up precious counter or vanity real estate. [4]

I’m particularly fond of over-the-toilet storage units – they’re a fantastic way to maximize unused space and keep your essential items within easy reach. Just be sure to choose a style that complements the overall aesthetic of your bathroom.

Don’t Forget the Back of the Door

The back of your bathroom door is prime real estate for storage, my friends. Hang a over-the-door organizer or install a few strategically placed hooks to stash everything from cleaning supplies to extra toilet paper. [5]

And let’s not forget about the inside of the door itself – it’s the perfect spot to mount a mirrored cabinet or a narrow shelving unit. Just be mindful of the overall flow and accessibility of your space.

Conclusion

There you have it, my friends – my top tips for sneaking more function into your bathroom storage without sacrificing style. Remember, the key is to think creatively, declutter ruthlessly, and leverage every inch of available space.

With a little elbow grease and a dash of design flair, you can transform your bathroom from a cluttered mess to a serene oasis that sparks joy every time you step inside. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get organizing!

Unleash the Potential of Your Bathroom with Simple Transformations

Ah, the bathroom – that often overlooked, yet pivotal space in our homes. It’s where we start and end our days, a sanctuary where we indulge in self-care rituals. But let’s be honest, sometimes our bathrooms can feel a little… underwhelming. Fear not, my friend! I’m here to share a treasure trove of quick and easy decorating tips that will have your bathroom feeling fresh, vibrant, and oh-so-inviting.

Mirrors: The Cornerstone of Bathroom Style

Let’s start with the focal point of any bathroom – the mirror. I recently tackled a bathroom makeover for my sister and brother-in-law, and let me tell you, the mirror transformation was a game-changer [1]. Their existing mirror was just too small, making the space feel cramped and uninviting. I knew I had to find the perfect replacement to really open up the room.

The rule of thumb I followed? Keep the mirror around the same width as the vanity, or just a few inches narrower. And for the height, aim for about three-quarters the distance between the vanity and the light fixture. This creates a balanced, proportional look that instantly elevates the space.

Lighting: Bidding Farewell to the Dreaded Overhead Glare

Ah, the dreaded overhead bathroom lighting. You know the one – it casts harsh shadows and makes you feel like you’re being interrogated in a police station. Well, no more! I had the perfect solution for my sister’s bathroom [1].

I found a gorgeous light fixture that didn’t force the light straight down, but instead had a more diffused, flattering glow. And the best part? It was an absolute steal on Amazon. With this simple swap, the space instantly felt more inviting and spa-like. Remember, good lighting can make all the difference in a bathroom, so don’t be afraid to experiment until you find the perfect fixture.

Storage Solutions: Saying Goodbye to Clutter

Now, let’s talk about one of the biggest bathroom bugbears – storage. I don’t know about you, but my bathroom tends to accumulate all sorts of random products, gadgets, and odds and ends. It can start to feel like a jumbled mess [2].

That’s why I was determined to find some clever storage solutions for my sister’s bathroom. Floating shelves would have been my first choice, but I ultimately decided they might make the space feel a bit too cramped. Instead, I opted for some stylish wall baskets to keep things neat and tidy. And bonus – they double as decor!

For the towels, I ditched the bulky towel bar in favor of a handy towel ring right next to the sink. This not only saved precious wall space but also kept the towels within easy reach. Plus, I had my sister use some wall hooks behind the door to hang her bath towels, freeing up even more real estate.

Textiles and Accessories: Elevating the Everyday

Now, let’s talk about the fun stuff – textiles and accessories! These are the little details that can truly transform a bathroom from blah to beautiful. [3]

I knew I wanted to add some natural texture to my sister’s bathroom, so I chose a gorgeous bamboo shade to hang over the window. And speaking of texture, don’t sleep on the power of a statement bath mat. I found this stunning Beni Ourain-inspired rug that instantly elevated the space [4].

And let’s not forget the finishing touches – coordinated towels and hand towels, a stylish ceramic soap dish, and a few carefully curated pieces of wall art. These little details make all the difference in creating a cohesive, visually appealing space.

Bringing the Outdoors In: The Transformative Power of Plants

Last but certainly not least, let’s talk about the secret weapon in any bathroom makeover – plants! [5] I’m telling you, adding a few lush, leafy friends can instantly transform a bland bathroom into a tranquil, spa-like oasis.

In my sister’s bathroom, I incorporated a mix of low-maintenance, moisture-loving plants like a pothos and a snake plant. They not only looked gorgeous but also helped to purify the air and add a touch of natural, soothing beauty.

The End Result: A Bathroom Transformation That Pops

So there you have it, my friends – a treasure trove of quick and easy decorating tips to give your bathroom a mini makeover. From mirror swaps to lighting upgrades, storage solutions to textiles and accessories, and the transformative power of plants, these simple changes can breathe new life into your bathroom [6].

I’ll never forget the look on my sister’s face when she saw the finished product. She was absolutely giddy, and I have to admit, I was pretty darn proud of myself too. It just goes to show that with a little creativity and a few strategic tweaks, you can turn your tired, uninspired bathroom into a true oasis of relaxation and style.

So what are you waiting for? Grab your tools, get inspired, and let’s give your bathroom a mini makeover that’s sure to impress. Trust me, your daily self-care routine is about to get a whole lot more enjoyable. [7,8]

Choose the Perfect Paint Color with Helpful Bathroom Paint Tips

Choose the Perfect Paint Color with Helpful Bathroom Paint Tips

Painting a Blank Canvas

Over the past few months, I’ve been helping my dear old dad decorate the second floor of his home. Before I got my hands on it, it was a blank space in need of paint, furniture, and personality. I shared my design plan for an art deco guest bedroom right here, and then went on to share my ideas for a family-friendly loft space for the grandkids. Today, let’s discuss the windowless bathroom attached to the guest room.

My dad updated this bathroom when he bought the home, and the new touches are great – marble floors, white tile walls, a large white soaking tub, and a modern vanity. It’s not a small bathroom at all, and it feels pretty grand. However, the design feels a tad bland. Where’s the color? Where’s the personality? I immediately knew that the white walls weren’t working with the other design elements of the space, so a fresh paint color would be my first order of business.

Choosing the Perfect Hue

Because this is a bathroom with no windows, choosing the best paint colors can be a bit tricky. Natural light is so helpful when determining the right paint color. Contrary to popular belief, bright white isn’t a great choice for a windowless space, as it can make the room feel cold and dingy. [1] I prefer a mid-tone or dark hue to create warmer vibes, like the dark green paint color on the bathroom walls in our basement bathroom. I also suggest avoiding colors that are too vivid or bright as they can look harsh with only artificial light. [2]

In the adjoining guest room, I’m going with Benjamin Moore’s “Boothbay Gray.” It’s a mid-tone color that reads as a grayish-light blue. I want the guest bathroom color to complement this one and feel like a calm, spa-like retreat. I’m opting for a shade darker than “Boothbay Gray.” I’m all about a darker color in a small room to create a cozy and intimate atmosphere. Right now, this space has only crisp whites going on, with the marble floors and walls. Let’s add some contrast and elegance! [3]

In a windowless room, dark paint colors absorb light rather than reflect it. This completely changes the feel of a room! It makes a space feel more inviting and envelopes you in color. However, we will need to amp up the ambient lighting in the room (which I’ll discuss in a moment). [4]

Trick: Find Complementary Colors

Because I knew I wanted a paint color that complements “Boothbay Gray,” I first looked at the other colors on the paint swatch next to it. I didn’t have the particular paint swatch handy, but I Googled the paint code for “Boothbay Gray” and it’s HC-165. You can then search the colors near it (HC-164 or HC-166) and see if those work for your design. This is a nice trick and saves you a trip to the paint store when finding paint color inspiration. [1]

I also suggest going to the paint manufacturer’s website and finding the colors they suggest alongside your particular color. I did that for “Boothbay Gray” and I immediately liked “Night Train” in the above image. [1]

I know choosing the perfect paint color can be overwhelming, but hopefully, these little tricks help. Then, read this post with even more ideas to land the perfect hue! [1]

Testing the Options

I rarely choose a paint color without painting samples on the walls. Here are some tips for this crucial step in the paint color selection process:
– Paint samples on multiple walls, not just one
– Look at the color in different lighting conditions (morning, afternoon, evening)
– Step back and view the color from a distance
– Consider how the color will work with existing fixtures and furniture
– Give the samples a few days to fully dry before making your final decision

Using those tips, I chose three samples to paint in my dad’s bathroom. From top to bottom (all Benjamin Moore shades): Boothbay Gray, Night Train, Brewster Gray, Puritan Gray. [1]

When I first painted these colors, I had no clue which one would be the winner. They all looked great in the space. But, once I painted them next to the vanity, I knew which one I liked the best. Since the vanity color will stay the same, I didn’t want to choose a color that would match it. Instead, I want it to be a tad darker. I liked the middle color (“Brewster Gray”) the best. The top color’s green undertones were a bit too harsh next to the gray paint color on the vanity, while the bottom looked too muddy and greige next to the crispness of the vanity. [1]

I think “Brewster Gray” is a good choice for the wall color in this room. It has blue undertones and will look nice with the elements in the guest room next door. It will be the perfect backdrop for the other elements of the space.

Bringing in the Warmth

Now that I have a paint color figured out, let’s dive into my design plan for the rest of this space. We’ll be keeping all of the main elements of the room (the vanity, mirror, and toilet). Here’s my plan to add warmth and sophistication.

In the above photo, you can see the long blank wall on the right side of the room. That towel bar is not working (Sorry, Dad!), so I suggest removing it. Then, let’s add a wood wall treatment. You guys know I’m a huge fan of these because I’ve done just about every single style in my own home. We have shiplap, picture frame molding, board and batten, beadboard, and more! [5]

I knew that shiplap would be too farmhouse for my dad’s style, so I was going back and forth between picture frame molding and board and batten. Since the attached guest bedroom will have an art deco style, I think picture frame molding is the best choice for this bathroom. It’s an elegant way to add interest to a small space and it will give this room some life and personality! [6]

As of now, my dad’s bathroom only has overhead lighting with cool-toned light bulbs. It isn’t flattering and that is one of the reasons this bathroom is falling flat. Every room needs at least 2-3 light sources, so I suggest adding this gold sconce over the mirror. You can read more about my rules for lighting in this blog post. When in doubt, add more light fixtures to a space with little natural light. [7]

I’m all about mixing metals and (just like lighting), I suggest having 2-3 metal finishes in a room and I explain why in this blog post. Right now, the fixtures are all silver chrome, which reads very cold. Adding some gold touches to the bathroom will help warm up the space. We will leave the faucet and bathtub hardware as is, but let’s do a new gold towel ring, gold knobs on the vanity, and various gold accessories. Those small swaps will make a huge difference! [7]

Pulling it All Together

The main elements are set, and now it’s time for the fun stuff – the decor and accessories. Those cold marble floors are begging for a pretty rug. I would opt for this one that will fill the space and add color and texture to the floors. I’m also very excited about this wood towel rack to fill up space on that long wall. Wood is always a smart idea to add warmth to a cold space, and this one will warm things up while adding some function! Let’s opt for a wooden shelf over the toilet too. I love the curved lines on this one, and the rattan is fabulous!

Let me sum up what you can do to add personality and life to a boring bathroom:
– Choose a mid-tone or dark paint color to create a cozy, intimate vibe
– Utilize the trick of finding complementary colors on the paint swatch
– Always paint samples on the walls and test in different lighting
– Add wood wall treatments for visual interest
– Increase the ambient lighting with stylish sconces
– Mix in warm metallic accents like gold
– Incorporate natural textures like wood and rattan

I ordered all of the furniture for the guest bedroom and loft, and the professional painter has started working on these rooms too! I have one DIY project in mind for the loft area (a new wood wall treatment that I’m excited to try out!), so I’ll keep you posted as these spaces come together.

Make the Most of Your Bathroom with Layout and Storage Tips

Make the Most of Your Bathroom with Layout and Storage Tips

Unleash the Full Potential of Your Bathroom

Ah, the humble bathroom – often an overlooked oasis in our homes, where we start and end our days with a splash of routine. But what if I told you that your bathroom could be so much more than just a functional space? With the right layout and smart storage solutions, you can transform this often-neglected room into a serene sanctuary that truly reflects your personal style.

As a full-time tiny house dweller, I’ve learned a thing or two about maximizing every square inch. And let me tell you, when it comes to bathrooms, every inch truly counts. But don’t worry, my friend – I’m here to share my hard-earned wisdom and help you make the most of your bathroom, no matter its size or shape.

Rethink Your Layout for Maximum Efficiency

One of the first steps in creating your dream bathroom is to take a good, hard look at the layout. Is the current setup working for you, or does it feel like a chaotic jumble of fixtures and wasted space? Well, fear not, because with a little creativity and some strategic planning, you can completely revamp the layout to suit your needs.

Let’s start with the sink area. I know, I know – the classic vanity and mirror combo is a tried-and-true classic. But have you ever considered thinking outside the box? Why not ditch the traditional vanity and opt for a sleek pedestal sink instead? Not only does this free up valuable floor space, but it also creates a more open and airy feel. Plus, you can use the freed-up wall space to install some shelves or even a charming little ledge for displaying your favorite decorative accents.

And speaking of the mirror, don’t be afraid to think big! A large, statement-making mirror can instantly elevate the look and feel of your bathroom, making it appear more spacious and luxurious. Just be sure to choose a mirror that complements the overall style of the room.

But what about storage, you ask? Fear not, my friends, because there are plenty of clever ways to incorporate storage into your bathroom layout without sacrificing precious square footage. One of my personal favorites is the ubiquitous medicine cabinet. Sure, some designers may turn up their noses at these practical storage solutions, but I’m here to tell you that with the right design, a medicine cabinet can be a game-changer. Look for recessed options that seamlessly blend into the wall, or opt for a custom-built beauty that doubles as a stunning focal point.

And let’s not forget about the often-overlooked corners of your bathroom. Why not incorporate a sleek, wall-mounted cabinet or even a compact shelving unit to keep your essentials neatly organized and within reach? Trust me, these little touches can make a world of difference in a small space.

Harness the Power of Smart Storage Solutions

Now that we’ve tackled the layout, let’s dive into the wonderful world of bathroom storage. After all, what good is a beautifully designed space if you can’t keep it clutter-free and organized?

One of my favorite tricks is to think vertically. Instead of letting your countertops and vanity become a dumping ground for all your lotions, potions, and assorted knickknacks, look up! Wall-mounted shelves, baskets, and even repurposed ladders can be absolute game-changers when it comes to maximizing your storage potential.

And let’s not forget about the often-neglected space beneath the sink. This area is a veritable treasure trove of storage potential, just waiting to be tapped into. Invest in some clever under-sink organizers and pull-out drawers to keep everything neatly tucked away and easily accessible.

But the storage solutions don’t have to stop there, my friends. Get creative with your towel storage, too! Forget about those clunky towel bars and opt for something a little more visually interesting, like a sleek ladder or a set of stylish hooks. Not only will this free up valuable wall space, but it’ll also add a touch of personality to your bathroom.

And speaking of personality, don’t be afraid to get a little crafty with your storage solutions. Repurpose old crates, mason jars, or even vintage suitcases to create one-of-a-kind storage solutions that reflect your unique style. The possibilities are truly endless when you start thinking outside the box.

Embrace the Art of Bathroom Decor

Now that we’ve tackled the layout and storage, it’s time to have a little fun with the decorative elements. After all, what good is a beautifully organized bathroom if it doesn’t spark joy every time you step inside?

One of my favorite ways to infuse personality into a bathroom is through the use of bold, eye-catching artwork. Forget those generic stock photos and opt for something truly unique and meaningful. Whether it’s a colorful abstract painting or a whimsical vintage print, the right artwork can instantly transform the mood of your bathroom.

And speaking of mood, don’t forget about the importance of lighting. Strategically placed sconces, pendants, or even a stunning chandelier can create a warm and inviting atmosphere that makes your bathroom feel like a true oasis. Just be sure to choose fixtures that complement the overall style of the space.

But the decorative fun doesn’t have to stop there, my friends. Incorporate lush greenery, plush textiles, and even a few personal touches, like framed family photos or a beloved knickknack, to really make the space your own. Remember, the key to creating a truly stunning bathroom is to strike the perfect balance between form and function.

Embrace the Journey, Unleash Your Creativity

So there you have it, my fellow bathroom enthusiasts – the secrets to making the most of your bathroom with clever layout and storage solutions, all wrapped up in a delightful package of decorative inspiration.

But the real magic happens when you embrace the journey and let your creativity shine. After all, your bathroom should be a reflection of your unique style and personality. So don’t be afraid to experiment, take risks, and have a little fun along the way.

Who knows, you might just end up with a bathroom that’s not only functional but also a true oasis of self-expression. So what are you waiting for? It’s time to unleash the full potential of your bathroom and create the space of your dreams.

Totally Doable DIY Bathroom Updates You Can Handle

Totally Doable DIY Bathroom Updates You Can Handle

Bathroom Bliss on a Budget

Ah, the bathroom – that often-overlooked sanctuary where we start and end our days. Yet, for many of us, our bathrooms are in desperate need of a refresh. But who has the time, energy, or budget for a full-blown renovation?

Fear not, my friends! I’m here to share some totally doable DIY bathroom updates that you can tackle, even if you’re as handy as a fish with a bicycle. With a little elbow grease and some creative flair, you can transform your tired tub into a spa-worthy sanctuary, all without breaking the bank.

Toilet Seat Switcheroo

Let’s start with something simple – swapping out those old, chipped toilet seats. [1] As the DIY Playbook gal so eloquently put it, “Is that awkward? Ever since we moved into our condo, late last year, I’ve been meaning to change our old toilet seats. They’re 11 years old, they were chipping, and they were just straight-up kinda gross.”

I hear you, sister! Those crusty, worn-out toilet seats can really put a damper on your bathroom vibe. But the good news is, this is one of the easiest DIY updates you can tackle. Grab a wrench, a screwdriver, and some cleaning supplies, and you’ll have sparkling new seats in no time. [1] Just be sure to measure your toilet bowl to get the right size – round or elongated – and voila, a fresh start for your throne.

Tile Transformation

Now, I know tile work might sound a bit intimidating, but hear me out. With the right tools and a little patience, you can totally transform your bathroom tiles from drab to fab. [2]

Take it from the folks at Create Enjoy, who tackled a mosaic tile floor project. They walked us through the process step-by-step, proving that even a novice tiler can achieve professional-looking results. The key is breaking it down into manageable steps, taking your time, and being meticulous with your measurements and layout.

Before you know it, you’ll be swapping out those outdated tiles for a bold, beautiful pattern that’ll have your guests doing a double-take. Just imagine the compliments you’ll get when they see your handiwork!

Cabinet Comeback

Let’s talk cabinets. If those dated, dingy vanities are bringing you down, it’s time for a cabinet comeback. [3] Domestic Blonde showed us how to refinish bathroom cabinets for a like-new look, without the cost of replacement.

The process involves removing the doors, drawers, and hardware, giving everything a good sanding, and then applying a fresh coat of paint or stain. The best part? You can customize the color and hardware to match your new bathroom aesthetic.

Sure, it’s a bit more labor-intensive than swapping out a toilet seat, but the transformation is well worth it. Imagine how much brighter and more inviting your bathroom will feel with those revamped cabinets.

Lighting Luminosity

Lighting can make all the difference in a bathroom. [4] If your current fixtures are casting unflattering shadows or putting out a dull, outdated glow, it’s time for an upgrade.

Thankfully, changing out light fixtures is a relatively simple DIY project. The Thrifty Decor Chick shared her step-by-step process for installing a new vanity light, and the results were stunning.

With a little electrical know-how (or a helpful YouTube tutorial), you can swap out those old, builder-grade fixtures for something that truly brings your bathroom to life. Think sleek sconces, statement pendants, or even a dazzling chandelier – the options are endless!

Textiles Transformation

Don’t forget about the finishing touches, my friends. Swapping out your towels, shower curtains, and bath mats can instantly refresh the look and feel of your bathroom. [5]

Jenna Burger showed us how a bold, patterned wallpaper can completely transform a space. While the installation process might require a bit more elbow grease, the payoff is undeniable. Imagine the wow-factor of walking into your bathroom and being greeted by a stunning, custom-designed accent wall.

And let’s not forget about those practical yet often-overlooked textiles. A plush new bath mat, fluffy towels, and a crisp, clean shower curtain can work wonders in elevating the overall ambiance.

Embrace the DIY Spirit

So there you have it, folks – a whole host of totally doable DIY bathroom updates that you can tackle, even if you’re more at home behind a computer screen than a power tool. [2,3,4,5]

The key is to embrace your inner DIY spirit, break projects down into manageable steps, and not be afraid to get a little hands-on. Who knows, you might just surprise yourself with your newfound bathroom renovation superpowers!

Remember, your bathroom doesn’t have to be a source of frustration or a financial drain. With a little creativity and elbow grease, you can transform it into a personal oasis that brings you joy every time you step inside. So, what are you waiting for? Grab your tools, channel your inner designer, and get to work on creating the bathroom of your dreams!

Problem-Solving Solutions for Awkward Bathroom Spaces

Problem-Solving Solutions for Awkward Bathroom Spaces

Problem-Solving Solutions for Awkward Bathroom Spaces

Have you ever walked into a bathroom and felt like you were immediately bumping into everything? Or maybe you have a tiny closet that’s more like a tight squeeze than a functional storage space? I’ve been there, my friends. In fact, our master bathroom and closet situation was the epitome of awkward and cramped before we made some major changes.

When I mentioned to my friends that we were replacing the doors in our master ensuite area with barn doors, I got a lot of blank stares. These people have seen our bedroom and I’m sure they were wondering how barn doors could possibly fit in with our decor. That’s why we opted for a more modern, streamlined interpretation of the classic sliding door.

Our “new” home was built in the early 2000s and, like many homes of that era, the layout and design choices left a bit to be desired. One of the things I’ve always disliked about our space was the awkward bi-folding doors leading into the master closets and bathroom area. Not only did they create a lot of noise, the gap in the middle of the doors when closed never felt very private. And to make matters worse, just beyond this clumsy opening were our “his and hers” closets, each with doors that used to swing into the closet space. This arrangement greatly reduced the functionality of the available space. The only way to access the items behind the door was to go in and close the door behind you. It really needed something like sliding doors to help make the room a little more secure and private.

After many months of living life as a closet slob, because of inadequate storage, and hearing the annoying clang of those doors each morning, I was determined to find a solution. Ideally, the closets should have been built with pocket doors, but to retrofit a pocket door is quite an undertaking. We realized that a barn door or sliding door was our solution. But we also realized that the style of our home is more traditional and a rustic barn door is just not in step with the architecture of the home, nor in keeping with the style of our bedroom.

That’s when we decided to create our own modern, streamlined interpretation of a sliding barn door. We searched and found a streamlined version of sliding door hardware, from Amazon for around $90 each. We love everything about this hardware. It’s solidly built, completely quiet and very high quality. The only thing it lacked was thorough instructions. If you’ve ever built something from Ikea, that’s what this was like. But with a little trial and error, we figured it out.

Our next decision was to choose a style for the sliding barn doors. I wanted something contemporary, yet classic enough to work in a traditional space. A four-panel door seemed to fit the bill nicely. We decided to build the doors ourselves using red oak PureBond Plywood. After our doors and hardware were hung, the next thing to consider was how to deal with the remaining door stop, holes for the door strike and the hinges.

One option that would have worked was to cover the offending side of the door jamb with a piece of wooden lattice. It also would have brought the level almost up to the door stop. But we decided to rip all of the casing out and create the look of a cased opening, completely removing the evidence of an old door jamb. This process ended up being a little more involved than we thought. Most homes are built using door kits, so we wrongly assumed that the door jamb was made up of three pieces of wood. But in actuality, it was two pieces that took a good deal of chiseling to remove. It took some careful, methodical work because we chose not to remove the door casing/trim.

To build back the opening as a cased opening we used 1×6’s ripped down to fit the opening, about 4 3/4 inches wide. The level of the opening varied greatly around each side of the door, so we cut scraps of wood to shim each side to the desired depth. In some places, we used pieces that were an inch thick, other places we needed thinner pieces like scraps of beadboard. The resulting transition of a smooth opening was worth the effort.

When we initially ordered the door hardware we didn’t even realize it came with a finger pull. The back side each of the plates needed to be counter sunk for our doors because of how closely it came to the door casing/trim. On the front of the main door I wanted a more decorative, statement pull, so that required a little bit of planning. The top hole for the handle was a simple counter sink, but for the bottom, we counter sunk the finger pull and then drilled a countersunk hole for the handle. Eventually, we just glued the finger pull in place along with caulking around the edges.

The resulting space is remarkably clean and open. It’s amazing how removing doors with hinges gives you so much more room. It feels so grand to walk through this little hallway now. I just love how this has completely transformed this space! Functionally, the modern sliding barn entry way doors achieved the goal of a quiet, less cumbersome, entry into the ensuite and happily more space in our closets!

[1] As I mentioned earlier, our master bathroom and closet situation was a real problem area. The awkward bi-folding doors and swing-in closet doors just made the whole space feel cluttered and disjointed. But by replacing them with our custom sliding barn doors, we were able to create a much more cohesive and functional layout.

[2] One of the key benefits of the sliding barn door design is the space-saving aspect. Traditional hinged doors require a good amount of clearance to swing open, which can really eat up precious square footage, especially in smaller bathrooms. But with a sliding door, the entire door panel moves along a track, allowing you to maximize the available floor space. This was a game-changer for us, as it gave us much more flexibility in how we arranged the rest of the bathroom and closet furnishings.

[3] Another major perk of the sliding barn doors is the noise reduction factor. Those old bi-folding doors were constantly creaking and clanking, which was particularly disruptive first thing in the morning when my husband was trying to get ready for work. The solid, well-constructed sliding hardware we used creates a seamless, quiet operation that’s so much more peaceful. No more waking the whole household with a noisy door opening!

[4] Of course, aesthetics were also a key consideration for us. We wanted a design that would complement the traditional style of our home, but still feel fresh and modern. The clean lines and simple paneling of our custom doors fit the bill perfectly. They add an architectural interest and sophistication that the old doors completely lacked.

[5] While sliding barn doors are an increasingly popular solution for awkward entryways, there are a few things to keep in mind during the planning process. Clearance for the door track is critical, as you’ll need several inches of space above the door opening to accommodate the hardware. You’ll also want to make sure the door is wide enough to fully cover the opening when closed, for maximum privacy. And don’t forget to factor in any baseboards or trim that may impact the door’s range of motion.

[6] Overall, our sliding barn door project was a resounding success. It completely transformed a cramped, dysfunctional area into a bright, airy, and sophisticated space. The modern design blends seamlessly with our home’s aesthetic, while the practical benefits of the sliding mechanism have made our daily lives so much easier. If you’re dealing with an awkward bathroom or closet layout, I highly recommend exploring a sliding barn door solution. It just might be the perfect problem-solver for your space!
